Lord John McFall<\/li><li>Fundraising in partnership with the UK\u2019s leading children\u2019s charity Barnardo\u2019s<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-affbeab e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"affbeab\" data-element_type=\"container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b3c2171 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b3c2171\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>LONDON, 23 June 2021: The Prime Minister and leaders from around the world are being urged to support women left marginalized after the deaths of their husbands from Covid-19, ahead of the tenth UN International Widows Day this week.<\/p><p>Whilst the G7 included many admirable pledges, from Boris Johnson vowing to \u201censure this country is a force for good\u201d to world leaders committing one billion vaccine doses for poorer countries and getting 40 million more girls into education by 2026, there was a notable absence to the list \u2013 Covid widows.<\/p><p>For millions of widows from poor backgrounds in countries, particularly across Asia, Africa and South America, it is not unusual for them to be blamed by the family for the husband\u2019s death. As well as dealing with their loss, widows are often abandoned by their in-laws and own families, may face \u2018cleansing\u2019 rituals and are left on the margins of society. They are often robbed of their inheritance rights.<\/p><p>Death rates from Covid are reported to be higher in men than women in many countries, with the ONS recording an almost 18% difference in the total number of deaths for men (63,700) vs women (53,300) in the UK. On top of that, people from BAME and less affluent backgrounds have been disproportionately affected.\u00a0<\/p><p>In light of that, crossbench peer Lord Loomba\u00a0CBE, founder of the global UN NGO\u00a0the\u00a0Loomba Foundation which campaigns for the rights of widows worldwide, is calling for the UK government to\u00a0lead the world in its support for widows as countries rebuild from the devastating impact of the pandemic.<\/p><p>In the UK Lord Loomba is urging ministers to fund the creation of support groups for Covid-19 widows, and to provide financial and practical assistance for those who have been bereaved as a result of the pandemic. Globally, his foundation, whose president is Cherie Blair CBE QC, is calling for leaders to prioritise educating the children of poor widows and to take steps to empower widows so that they can make a living and regain their dignity.<\/p><p>International Widows Day, now in its 10<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0year, was initially launched\u00a0by the Loomba Foundation\u00a0at the House of Lords and\u00a0is now a United Nations recognised day of action to address the poverty and injustice faced by widows in many countries around the world. It was founded by Lord Loomba in memory of his mother,\u00a0Shrimati Pushpa Wati Loomba,\u00a0who became a widow an early age of 37 and succeeded in educating her seven young children single handed.<\/p><p>On the day of his father\u2019s death, Lord Loomba\u2019s grandmother ordered his mother, a young widow, to remove her bangles, jewellery and bindi \u2013 the sign of a married woman \u2013 and to wear only white clothes from thereon. Lord Loomba was fortunate as his mother was able to maintain his education, however many across the world do not get that opportunity.<\/p><p>Lord Loomba CBE, Founder and Chairman Trustee of the Loomba Foundation, said: \u201cIt is shocking that widows in many countries still face the same stigma and discrimination today after losing their partner that my mother did over sixty years ago. If the Prime Minister is to make good on his G7 pledge to \u2018ensure this country is a force for good\u2019 then the UK needs to show leadership in providing both financial help and practical support for the millions of bereaved widows and their children who face marginalisation from society.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cb718e4 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"cb718e4\" data-element_type=\"container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4f3d49e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4f3d49e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>London, 28 June 2022: <a href=\"https:\/\/loomba.map.studio\/\">The Loomba Foundation<\/a>, an international UN accredited NGO dedicated to improving the lives of widows, commemorated its 25<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary last week, on International Widows Day. Over 300 guests including senior politicians and leading business leaders gathered to celebrate the milestone occasion on 23<sup>rd<\/sup> June, at the Banqueting House in London\u2019s Whitehall.<\/p><p>The event was dedicated to raising funds for a humanitarian initiative launched by The Loomba Foundation in partnership with Barnardo\u2019s, the UK&#8217;s largest children&#8217;s charity, to support families, including mothers and their children, fleeing war-torn Ukraine to settle in the UK. The evening culminated with the successful fundraising of more than \u00a360,000 within just a few minutes, with donations still ongoing. The Loomba Foundation has a goal to reach \u00a3100,000 going forward to fund the initiative with Barnardo\u2019s to help 1,000 families.<\/p><p>A \u00a3100 voucher will be issued to each mother settling in the UK from Ukraine to be spent in any of Barnardo\u2019s 630 physical shops or online on essential items including clothing, toys and furnishings. Most recipients are likely to be vulnerable women and children who may have lost husbands and fathers in the conflict. They have experienced significant upheaval and trauma and require urgent support to set up a new life.<\/p><p>During the evening, Guest of Honour Rt Hon. Sir Tony Blair KG, former British Prime Minister, took to the stage to congratulate Lord Loomba on the milestone anniversary and the launch of this new initiative with Barnardo\u2019s. He recalled how in 1997, seeing that this charity stood for a strong cause, his wife, Cherie Blair QC CBE, pledged to embark on the journey with Lord Loomba to advocate for official UN recognition of International Widows Day. She said: \u201cHuge congratulations to Lord Loomba for the amazing achievements of The Loomba Foundation as it turns 25 years old. The hard work paid off in 2010 when International Widows Day was finally recognised by the United<i>&nbsp;Nations.<\/i>&nbsp;It has been a huge privilege to work by his side and to see our community of global supporters grow. While we have come far, there is still a long way to go. We will not rest until the many grave injustices faced by widows are eliminated for good, aiming for the day when every widow has the help she deserves to rebuild her life and secure a bright future for her children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lord Raj Loomba CBE, Founder and Chairman Trustee of the Loomba Foundation, said: \u201cIt was a pleasure to see so many distinguished guests come together to commemorate the Foundation\u2019s 25<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;anniversary.
